On the Edge

I got these pictures from A Cup of Jo, who got it from black eiffel, who got it from Waldo's Post. So they're well on their way to becoming viral.

They're pictures from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, where between September and December you can go to an area called The Devil's Swimming Pool and swim to the edge without being swept over! This is due to a natural rock wall just below the water at the very edge of the pool that you can see in the photographs and that slows the current even at the edge. Still - not for the faint of heart!

James,
a segment about this waterfall was aired on an episode of "Globetrekker", the t.v. travel show. But photographically speaking, what is it about waterfalls that seem to hold our attention? I think it has to do with biblical references, edenic paradise and whatnot. I think there is a duality at play with waterfalls: on the one hand they represent the origins of life (water). On the other hand they represent death (the fall and drowning.) Also, you can add the force of God manifested in the natural world; all of these factors conspire to make waterfalls endlessly interesting as a photographic topic. If you want to see a great artist channel her creative energies into a communion with the all mighty check out Lynn Davis' show currently at the Edwyn Houk gallery in NYC. She is best known for her inspired photos of religious sites. There are some pictures of the Igazu Falls in Argentina that are sublime. Also, check out photographer Alec Soth's book called "Niagara." He did a great close up of Niagra falls that is loaded with meaning (love compared to a force of nature or marriage as drowning in misery?)....you decide. James, again, great blog. Glad I found it.

I am off the Victoria Falls next week and trying to get up the courage to do this myself - after your pictures - I have to!!! or should I go bungee jumping.

I've swam in that pool! It is almost right in the middle of the falls between the Zimbabwe and Zambia sides (I went from the Zambia side), so the worst part is making your way along the top of the waterfalls.
It was spectacular though. Did some cliff jumping into the pool, it's pretty deep. You can see all the tiny tourists across the chasm.

I wouldn't recommend trying this now though. Rainy seasons starts in October!

I've seen photos of this place in emails before. I'm not sure I'll be daring enough to go to that edge. I couldn't even bring myself to a high open-air waterslide in a water park a few years ago.
