Weekend Video - Don't Bring Me Down

I was running on the treadmill plugged into my i-pod shuffle when this song came on. It's the version of the Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down" from the film "Across the Universe" which I know I've raved about at least once before. But connected to the music in the way you are when you run with headphones I was struck again by how the interpretations of the songs not only revitalized them but in many cases actually improved them. Let me know what you think.

I agree! This interpretation is so emotion filled/charged. I love the movie for that very reason. It also brings the relevance of the Beatles to a new generation.

I truly hated this film, however, I do love that woman's voice. It's sensational.

I did enjoy the film although not near as much as I was expecting to.

I wish they did more reinterpreting of the songs, as they did in...say Moulin Rouge with 'Roxanne.' If you're just going to have different people sing it there's not much point.

I hated most of Across the Universe's interpretations of the Beatles songs and the plot line was thinner than Mama Mia's, which I thought was impossible.

In my opinion, if you're going to cover a popular song, especially an iconic and beloved Beatles song, you've got to put enough of a spin on it so that you can distinguish and separate yourself from the original and turn it into your own--otherwise why bother. The songs were done great the first time around, we don't need any more weak imitations.

I thought the cinematography was the most interesting aspect of the movie and I do give it high marks for being experimental, but I thought the songs just fell flat.

I didn't expect to like the movie and was pleasantly surprized. My husband and I thought it was a clever contemporary interpretation with a light opera presentation. As for the music, it was fun. I do think you need to see the images while you listen to the music if you are a traditional Beatles fan.
