Listen Up!

From CuteOverload.com

Sorry, but I had to do something to get your attention!

The question is why are people not leaving comments these days? Or maybe the request is: please leave comments whenever you feel even the slightest bit moved to. They are really what keeps a blogger going. I would have thought that this week there would have been more than one comment on the Gursky photo or more than two comments on the amazing Narduzzi picture of the Byblos Art Hotel.

Maybe it's the weather...

oki, you got me!
... and here's my comment; i'll be honest and say that even though i view your every post, i rarely comment because you usually get a bunch. which becomes quite absurd in this situation.
i promise to be more well behaved in the future ;-)

most of the times maybe we are just speechless. think of it this way. a picture is worth a thousand words. cliché but true.

Hahaha, well, I do digg that photo. ;)

One does get the feeling that there's nobody out there sometimes, in spite of what the analytics data.

People I know in the real world tend to respond by emailing me, rather than using the comment tool.

Then there's the age thing... Those of us who are both British and seriously old were trained 'not to butt in' to conversations. Unless invited.

Okay, I feel invited!

As are you... http://sandlander. blogspot.com awaiting comments.

:-) Yea, it's the weather over here too. And I've been trying to find my own angle of Street Photography.

I've also been wathching BBC Four's - The Genius of Photography (Just got the book in the mail too), and all six epiodes converted to my Pod so I can have them with me always.

Anyway, the funny thing is that all your latest stuff published kept referring back to the episods I've just seen.

There was Gursky's 99 Cent II, Diptych thea went for $3.3 million and you show his Prada photographs.

Another episode talked about Dorothea Langea's Migrant Mother and there you are again with Bracketology.

Oh yea, I really enjoyed seen the new gallery space and the reception bell.

A side-effect of using google reader is that I hardly ever comment on blogs anymore - apologies! But I have truly enjoyed several of your recent posts, particularly Mandy Corrado (how fascinating to see her play with the model/artist relationship)and the Gursky series (not to mention that wonderful Nan Goldin cherry blossom photo). I love how well-curated your blog is, when so many others are just a deluge of random words and images, and I happily look forward to your next post as a continuing education in photography, even if I don't always say so. Many thanks!

Hi

I read your blog regularly from the day it was born. I do enjoy it a lot. I must say. But I don't have much to add to your wise, well documented, opinions and choices other than a "wow" "great" etc.
Now that I know how you feel I'll do it regularly.
Greetings from Spain.

Sorry James, afraid I'm a bit of a lurker by nature! Great blog, I always enjoy seeing what amazing images you've selected for us - certainly wasn't expecting dog/hamster cuteness!

sometimes one is so moved to leave words behind.
and sometimes your silent fans are more in need of your blog posts.
just keep posting and we'll keep visiting - promise.

Big (quiet, shy) fan. Aren't people who like it behind the lens usually the quiet ones? Keep up the blog, I read it every day. :)

Well, now that I cone to think about it, I may offer a suggestion for your next Location themed expo: Angel Marcos (http://www.angelmarcos.com/obra.php)

I am a daily reader of this blog, but I guess you would never know I was here unless I leave a comment. I think most readers of blogs tend to forget that.

I will be in NYC for a day trip in June, and hope to see your new space for the first time...

I visit now that I put you on my blogroll, but as I am not an artist and I am a complete and total stranger to you, I often feel intimidated and nervous to comment.... I wonder if you are thinking to yourself, "OK, who the f#ck is she???!!! But, I love what I see here...I am a creative (not original or artistic) highly visual person....

And it helps, I think, when you answer people back...or not.... Maybe I'm weird that way (and I am new to the blogging world) but I actually come back to see if you answer me in the comments.... There is one blogger with whom I go back and forth with witty repartee. I have quite a lot of fun with him. (Not that I expect that from you...no. no....)

I enjoy your blog very much.

I'm also a RSS reader user, and thus don't leave comments cause I'm all about the content, and in this case, it's awesome!

Thanks much!

James, I stumbled on your blog about a year ago, looking for a photo for work. And ever since, I check in everyday. First thing every morning. Hope that helps validate your efforts. Keep it up! - Jeremy (Chicago)

Happy to be of service! I was so flabbergasted by your comments on Gursky (you don't like him? Why?) that I was, literally, speechless. Would love to hear more on that topic if you get a chance.

I think more and more people are using google reader for looking at their favorite blogs. To leave a comment you then actually have to make the effort to open the blog itself. Maybe that has something to do with it. Nevertheless, I have been puzzled myself by the lack of comments on your blog. Because it's such a great blog, personal and informative, and very generous. Please keep it up. We're out there. I'm sure you look at your stats. They must be really high, right?

I must admit - I am a one of those who enjoy silently.
I love what you show me but I do not have the feeling that I could ad anything valuable to it.

I will try to express myself a little more, I know how important feedback is!

James,
A summary of what I've thought recently:
That shot of Paris that you acquired is now my desktop image - I would have bought it myself if you hadn't.

I love your blog, loved the recent video mashups you've posted, LOVE the Byblos Hotel shot and am trying to figure out whether I'll ever be in Verona to experience it for myself...too much to love but will tell you so from now on!!

I love your blog. Your weekend videos are the best. I usually don't leave comments because I don't think you'd want to read them. I guess I'll leave them more often.

g+m said...

I read every single post. Out of all the blogs I read (and there's a lot), yours is my favorite. Please don't stop.

I rarely comment because I feel like we're all always just saying the same thing--so unless I've got something insightful to say, I let it alone.

I think also many of your loyal readers, are in school. This is not a good time of year for college and grad students.

Haha, cheap trick, but seems to have done the trick. The last time I posted a comment I ticked the box to receive notification of subsequent comments and my inbox has been flooded even since. I guess I thought my comments would probably be lost in the regular flood of remarks from similar fans. I too love how well curated this blog is, as someone else commented earlier. The posts are always fascinating, never too wordy or self-indulgent, but always illuminating enough. Thanks!

love your blog... read faithfully.
i'm shy about commenting because sometimes blog comments (not necessarily yours) end up on google searches and things sound weird taken out of context.
guess i could comment and just sign off as anon.
the dog-mouse pic clearly got my attention!!!

Many apologies! I normally don't like to comment unless I have something worthwhile to add to the conversation. However, as a fellow blogger I know how happy I am when people leave comments on my blog. I will try my best to be more of a contributor in the future.

Yours is a fantastic blog, and I do visit every time I'm logged onto my computer. Thanks for all of the wonderful posts about interesting art, and related subjects.

cool. You ask for comments and get them. I should give this a try.

you're a regular stop in my daily wanderings. Keep it up.

Hey! I love your blog and check it every day. :) Will try to comment more.

I posted a comment before, but it never came up. I figured you use strict policies to put them up. I enjoy your blog and as with the comment above my desktop background these days is that Paris picture!
\thanks

I am an avid reader too, but using google reader, I am not that often ON your site.

I am trying to improve my photography and I love how you present so many different work and your comments on them.

I'll try to come around more often.

a photographer friend introduced me to your blog. he's a lurker, like me. he put up his own blog because you inspired him: http://no-caption-needed.blogspot.com. hope you can check his photos. :)

p.s. when you don't post anything for a while, i feel sad. like missing my daily cup of coffee.

Never commented, but love your blog. One of the best out there.

i loved the gursky photograph so much, i twittered about it, i mentioned you in an interview and it is now my screensaver! i don't know why i didn't let you know how much i love your blog and how inspiring and life-affirming i find it. THANK YOU. keep them coming x

Michelle said...

I come to your blog for inspiration all the time! I have to admit that sometimes I'm just a bit intimitated to comment, since I know little to nothing about photography. But I promise to be more inquisitive in the future!

I try to comment when I feel I have something to say, but so often the conversation on this blog is something to learn from.

And in my defense, as an adjunct professor, I just gave my final yesterday and finally have some room to breathe...and comment! More comments coming, when I am able.

You're on my Reader, my blogroll on my blog and I read you nearly every time you post. Love the blog!

(Thanks for the reminder to do my part.)

This blog is really good and I read it every day from my iPhone! I do not comment because Im not sure what I would write, since you already give such a good overview of the topics.

In any case, stay reassured, I am a big fan of this blog!

Me too! I'm a big fan; I read every post with an RSS reader... but I woldn't know how to say something useful when I read.
But I have a question... why there aren't cathegories on the site? They would be useful when we want to re-find any of your always useful and interesting posts!

Hi!
Due to the fact that my poor google reader is overloaded, the unread items list can reach 1,000 (i'm such a procrastinator). So sometimes it turns that i read 17 of your latest posts:)) (ehhm,to be true, today is exactly the case).

like many people said,i just enjoy reading you blog quietly and don't feel the need to add my 2 cents.

btw, today a friend of mine read the post about Steven Meisel's book and told me "please send me a link of more of those blogs you read":)

o.k,that was helluva long comment.take care!
