Weekend Video - Couric & Palin

I try to refrain from putting too much about politics on this blog, so I'm sorry if anyone finds this offensive, but this excerpt from yesterday's broadcast of Katie Couric's interview with Sarah Palin has to be seen to be believed. Comments please.

P.S. (late addition to the post)

A friend just noted that Sarah Palin's performance reminded her of last year's famous South Carolina Miss Teen USA contestant.

P.P.S.

I hate to lay it on, but I just saw this Jimmy Kimmel clip explicating Miss South Carolina's answer and it had me laughing out loud. FYI - he starts the analysis at 1:43 into the clip. Hopefully he will perform the same service for Sarah Palin.

I feel so well informed about geography now.... Thanks!

p.s. No wonder they are keeping her away from interviews...

Well, I think it is unfair to expect that any governor would have much in their resume when it comes to negotiation with a foreign government. I doubt that any of our successful governors turned president had much.

Personally, I'm not sure how any of the candidates get through an interview sounding intelligent because in the back of their mind they have to know that half the world is waiting for a "got you" so they can take horrible sounding snippets and post them on YouTube, or now I guess each candidate is willing to use such snippets in campaign ads.

All in all, I guess her comments aren't any worse than Joe Biden talking about Roosevelt addressing the American public on television during the Great Depression. But then again, Biden probably won't be on the ticket much longer so I guess it doesn't matter much what he says (at least that seems to be the internet rumor for this week).

Worryingly incoherent. Is she admitting that America uses Alaska as a base to spy on Putin?!
Relations between Russia and the West are at a delicate balance. Russia resents the Anglo-Europeanisation of its old Soviet block countries. It feels it was taken advantage of while at a low ebb, now its situation has improved its ready to bite back, as we saw recently in Georgia. Is Palin really someone you'd want to have any sort of foreign policy responsibility?

I guess that if watching Russian planes flying by is considered foreign policy experience, then she is the perfect candidate to compliment McCain.

The sadder truth is that she looks good, people in general like that, and like the old Saturday Night Billy Crystal said..."..its better to look good than to feel good...you look marvelous.."

I do wish Katie had asked something she could answer cogently, like - "what's a good moose jerky recipe?"

Between Palin's incoherence and resume puffing and McCain's flip-flopping on every issue he's presented with, Obama should be 50 points in the lead. As far as I can tell, there is only one reason he's not in the lead and that is because he's not all white. Is there another reason?

The stupidity of both Palin and the American people at-large, is quite the hot topic.

Frank,
I think that is just a rumor by the right wingers. No way that can be true.

That said, this whole Palin thing is the biggest sham this country has ever seen, even more so than W. Holy Cow!

Has she got any media training? Politics 101. I'd get nervous with her in charge of actual foreign relation negotiations.

Well done Katie Couric!!! She kept the perfect balance of being respectful but not discarding her obligation as a journalist to not let her subject off the hook as the enormity of her ignorance began to reveal itself.

Thank you for posting this. I'm an ex-pat living in Paris (no CBS Evening News). I still haven't been able to stop shaking my head in disbelief since McCain announced her as his running mate.

Patiently waiting to see the Biden-Palin debate...

You can tell that Palin is a little nervous and insecure in this snapshot. While I'm sure she's nervous because she realizes the huge spotlight that is on her and that any little comment can be taken out of context (as I believe this clip is), you do have to wonder that if she is nervous and insecure here, what will she be like as (vice) president?!?!

I DIED watching Miss SC the first time I saw it ...such as....lol

no comment on Palin.

Did anyone ever see the film Being There? Kind of like that except I think I would vote for "Chance the Gardener" before Sarah Palin.......very very scary.

What, exactly, is a "trade mission" with Russia???

I just don't think there IS a comment worthy enough to sum up her performance. Best to find the SNL opening segment spoof from last night (Sat 9/27/08) and watch that after watching this.

I like how you summed up your post with Jimmy Kimmel, and I thought all of it was, well hilarious-LOL

The seriousness of live needs to be removed some times because laughter is really the best medicine.

Thanks :=}

what can i say? summing up one's experience in international affairs byclaiming that yeah, russia, obviously, they're right there, next to our country. you know, this powerful country and putin flying over our tarritory, you know. how lame is that please. i guess, as a european, although not a state executive, i sure do have experience in international affairs, my country borders 4 other countries! obviously. i really hope, for your country's sake that the people there will weight in all the pros and cons and keep in mind speeches like that when casting their votes

I like Gov Palin. Better than the marxist Obama.

I am absolutely horrified that Senator McCain chose Governor Palin as a running mate.
It is completely irresponsible and even unfair to her.
The pandering is just outrageous.

justifies my theory....when they teach the wave (elbow, elbow, wrist-wrist-wrist) it puts them (the queen wanna bes) into a zombie stupor at which point they suck out all their brain matter and replace it with oatmeal....

I have a friend who ran in pageants and she's never been the same....

oh, and she talks EXACTLY like these "gals" and doesn't know where ANYTHING is on ANY map....

it's a shame, really, a cryin shame....makes me cry just thinking of the shame if they win....
