Weekend Video

Over a year ago, rumors began to circulate that the $75 million dollar film of “Where The Wild Things Are” was in trouble. Directed by Spike Jonze, with a script by Dave Eggers, monsters from the Jim Henson company, and music by Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s), the film adaptation of the Maurice Sendak children’s classic had intriguing creative/hipster potential. But the word was that it too dark and scary and the actor playing the mischievous Max had failed to impress the brass at Warner Brothers. Test screenings were reputedly disastrous.

It’s now slated for an October 2009 release, but if the above trailer is anything to go by, it certainly looks visually impressive. I’m keeping my fingers crossed.

Oh wow!!!!

In french it's called 'Max et les maximonstres'. A favorite in my familly for two generations. I really hope they did it according to the spirit of the book.

Can't wait!

Hmm... your link doesn't seem to be working right now. I think this is the trailer that I've seen a few times already, with the Arcade Fire song as it's soundtrack. From the trailer the film does look like it will be visually stunning; hopefully it will be terrific on all fronts.

The link seems fine right now. Try again.

I like everything about this but the muppets. They look jarringly out of place -- like people under ill-fitting, furry costumes. Otherwise, I'm intrigued -- and the kid looks like the perfect actor from these short clips.

I am still unconvinced as to whether or not I would see this in theaters. I never owned the book as a child, but I remember reading it in the school library.

There is currently a parody of this trailer scampering about the internet...except the children's book is "Everyone Poops".

I can't wait for this film. I read this book as a child and I love the trailer. I just hope the studio doesn't kill the movie and maybe just maybe their criticism ended up being helpful.

Spike Jones has a blog about this move and the things that art/artists music inspired it and him:

Yes, it's working fine now. This version is different than the one I had seen... even better!

Shame we have to wait another four months, though.

I've watched this trailer half a dozen times since it came out, this post being the sixth time.

...I didn't actually get weepy this time, but it could have gone either way.

Looking forward to this.

I've heard about this film and it is a must see on my film list.

though I've never read the book (I don't think it's widely read here in Europe), I am looking forward to see the movie. Love Spike Jonze, and want to see how he tackles a children's fairytale, having in mind all his 'insane' work he's done so far
...and I love monsters

I'm really looking forward to the film as well. Seems to be very well done judging by the trailer. Also, great blog, I can always appreciate good photography!
