From cherry blossoms to civil rights mugshots to photographs of the female figure. I know it’s sometimes a leap, but that’s what this blog was always intended to be – an appreciation of the kaleidoscopic breadth of photography that I am lucky to engage with in my daily life.
The pictures above and below are from a benefit auction I helped ALLURE Magazine curate, all proceeds of which go to fund skin cancer research. Nadine McCarthy, ALLURE’s Director of Photography worked with me on their end. The theme, based on the magazine’s May issue, is “Alluring Bodies”. The auction takes place tonight.
Above and below are a number of my favorites from the 60 pictures being auctioned. And no, I do not think these pictures objectify women in an inappropriate way. And yes, that is Carla Bruni, the first lady of France, at the end. (Last month the first nude picture of her to come up at auction since she married President Sarkozy sold at Christies for over $90,000 to a Chinese collector! And once the picture began to garner an undue amount of publicity the seller gave the entire proceeds to charity.)
A unique collaboration by Edward Mapplethorpe and Patti Smith

Some fantastic pictures! I hope the auction goes well.
congratulations for being a blog of note!
and thanks for inviting us to give these pictures a second look... beyond "is she beautiful?".
congratulations
for being selected in blog of note
Well, I am interested in the lack of diversity in the images. The body shape, color - all very similar (sans boobs)...are there no or very few alluring bodies of color and/or above a size 4?
But to be fair you did say that there are 60 pictures in the auction.
Also wondering if GQ or Esquire will be doing a similar auction - I look forward to seeing nude shots of men, coming soon? Or would that not work as well as a fundraiser?
These are simply beautiful.
i love the michael dweck & the lisa kereszy.
all the best with the auction

I just love, love, love this blog!
What!?!! Men can't be alluring?
I saw the blogs of note so I looked at "The Year In Pictures" and couldn't stop. Very nice blog.
To anonymous:
Allure is a women's beauty magazine. Hence the subject.
I think these are beautiful. I really love Craig McDean's and Susan Meiselas's photos.
I like the choice especially Lisa Kereszy's picture, but is really Scarlett Johansson made of wax ?
Just recently found your blog and getting used to this website. I loved all the pictures. Especially the one by Craig McDean. At first I didn't see what the face was, very cool.
To me it seems like it could be a metaphor for inner strength.
Nice collection....very artistically taken...
I love the apparant spontaneousity of some of them like p.e. the surf girl. These are great, beautiful pictures and I do not think that women are treated like objects here.
In France and in Spain -surely it'll be the same in the US- many femenists get angry at the sight of a piece of art with a naked female body in it. It is true that most of the nudes you get to see are female and that women's desire is mostly based on beeing desired, but that is the way it has been in many countries for thousands of years; it is really rooted in people's subconscious and it just won't change from one day to the other. All I can say to those who complain about these -not refearing to any of the above commenters- is that they should stop talking and go and make loads of arty pictures of naked men!
So, what I wanted to say is that, even if there's some controversy regarding women's nudes, I think they're perfectly OK.
Fantastic blog!
How much do you think the J. Teller will go for?
I'm impressed with all the pics ! fantastic =)
I think that these pictures are just wonderful...all except the one where the woman is lying on top of the bushes. They're wonderful!! Great blog!!!
EDWARD Mapplethorpe??????
cool image and interesting collaboration
Edward Mapplethorpe is Robert's younger brother. During the early part of Robert's career, Edward (who was trained as a photographer) was responsible for the lighting and printing of Robert's work. So there are interesting questions of authorship.
Pretty good pictures i could even see some of them in a high fashion magazine they had a certain sense about them that didnt make u feel that the photographer was perverted im just glad i didnt see any playboy looking shots;)
ps hope the actuion goes good
Michael Dweck's "surf girl" is definitely a thousand-words worth, and your blog is most captivating. Take Care, -C
